Self Forgiveness - Luke 6:37 - 37 we will begin with a
question.
Can we forgive ourselves? Does God intend for us
to be our own source of forgiveness. I hear many people say to those in deep
sin, "Well you need to forgive yourself" I have to admit that I have
trouble finding the biblical backing for this advice. Or I have heard people
say reflecting back on the length that it took them to finally give in to the
tugging from God, they say "I just couldn’t forgive myself."
Does it not insult the great grace our God when we try to
insinuate that the God-given process of forgiveness goes begging unless we hop
on the cross so and make believe we are Jesus for a little bit?
Maybe there is something obvious that I’m missing but I have never
felt that God’s forgiveness for me had the least bid of incompleteness in it. I
have always felt that His forgiveness is always more than enough. We can
completely trust in the forgiveness of JESUS. His blood is powerful, His love
is Inexhaustible, His NAME is above every NAME that is named. How can we say
that Jesus is our deliverer when we think that our victory came when we forgave
ourselves? The Bible tells us to forgive others.
Luke 6:37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye
shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven.
It tells us that we will be forgiven if we forgive others. Mark 11:25 And
when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father
also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. Mark 11:26 But
if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your
trespasses.
Mark 2:10 But that ye may know that the Son of man
hath power on earth to forgive sins.
It does not instruct us to forgive ourselves. I can’t think of one person in
the Bible that had a testimony of deliverance which was highlighted by self
forgiveness.
However we live in a world of self clean, self service, self banking, etc. I
just think we are not falling into the trap of believing in our selves so much
that we reduce the glory that belongs to God. I do not deserve any glory for
coming to God, confessing my sins, trying to earn my way into Jesus lap.
The beauty of it all is that Jesus has provided all the
forgiveness we will ever need. We just need to accept it by faith. No one is
good enough, strong enough or wise enough.
Why not just go ahead and give God the Glory and realize that you don’t have to
forgive yourself because Jesus already has. Just praise Him!
